YomiChan
Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 21, 2026
Overview
YomiChan is a local-first Japanese dictionary and review app. Core dictionary search and learning features work without creating an in-app account. We do not show third-party advertising, sell personal data, or track users across apps or websites.
Data Stored On Your Device
The app stores its bundled dictionary, search history, review progress, memory stages, display preferences, blocked danmaku authors, pending lookup state, and other learning settings on your device. The static dictionary database is kept separate from user learning data so that dictionary updates do not overwrite your progress.
Dictionary Search And Pending Words
When a term is not available locally, the app may send the search term, a limited device-scoped identifier, and basic request information to our Cloudflare-hosted dictionary service. Existing cloud entries are returned immediately. Reasonable missing terms may be stored as Pending Words for a bounded, locally operated dictionary-maintenance workflow. Invalid, abusive, or meaningless submissions may be rejected or removed.
Search submissions are subject to device and network rate limits. They are used only to provide dictionary lookup, protect the service, and maintain the shared dictionary. They are not used for advertising or cross-app tracking.
YomiChan Plus And Purchases
YomiChan Plus is an auto-renewable subscription processed by Apple through the App Store and StoreKit. Apple provides transaction identifiers, product information, purchase status, and server notifications needed to verify and restore entitlement. We do not receive or store your full payment-card or bank-account information.
A pseudonymous subscription-backed identifier is used to protect Plus features, associate the public profile with its owner, prevent duplicate nicknames, and enforce update limits.
iCloud Sync
Plus members may choose to synchronize learning data through the app's private CloudKit container. Synced learning data is stored in the user's private iCloud database and is governed by the user's Apple ID and iCloud settings. iCloud synchronization is initiated from the app settings and can be disabled through Apple device settings.
Public Profile, Avatar, And Danmaku
Plus members may create a public profile containing a unique nickname, a short biography, and a small avatar. The app crops and compresses the selected image locally to a 120 by 120 pixel PNG before upload, and the service rejects files larger than 128 KB. The profile is visible when another user opens a danmaku author's details.
Danmaku text, author profile information, word association, timestamps, reports, and moderation records may be stored by our Cloudflare-hosted service. Published danmaku is user-generated public content. Users should not include sensitive personal information in nicknames, biographies, avatars, or danmaku.
Feedback, Reports, And Service Protection
Word-error feedback and danmaku reports may include the affected word or message, a selected reason, optional details, and a limited request identifier. Reports are stored for moderation and may generate a sanitized alert in our private Slack channel. Rate-limit records and security logs may be retained for a limited period to prevent abuse and investigate service failures.
Photos, Speech, And Audio
Photo-library access is used only when you choose an avatar. Microphone and speech-recognition access is used only when you start voice search. Pronunciation uses device audio capabilities. Apple may process speech or iCloud data under Apple's own privacy terms.
Service Providers
We use Apple for App Store purchases, StoreKit, iCloud, and CloudKit; Cloudflare for dictionary and community APIs, database storage, rate limiting, and request delivery; GitHub Pages for these public information pages; and Slack for private operational alerts. These providers process only the information needed to deliver their respective functions.
Data Retention And Your Choices
You can remove local app data by deleting the app or using available in-app controls. You can manage iCloud data through your Apple ID and device settings. You can hide or block danmaku authors in the app. To request deletion or correction of server-side public profile, danmaku, or feedback data, contact us using the address below. Some transaction, abuse-prevention, and moderation records may be retained where required for security, accounting, legal compliance, or dispute handling.
Children
YomiChan is a general language-learning app and is not directed to children under 13.
Changes
We may update this policy when app features, storage, purchases, service providers, or data practices change. The effective date above identifies the current version.
